Ayumi Hamasaki's remixes have been a staple of her career since her debut. Soon after the release of her first original album A Song For XX, Ayu released a two-disc remix collection titled ayu-mi-x. The album was divided into a "club side" and "acoustic orchestra side," both of which featured re-worked versions of songs from her debut album. Additionally, the collection set the stage for her trance-heavy second original album that would open her growing catalogue to be remixed by both local and international talents. Since its introduction in 1999, there have been six volumes of ayu-mi-x albums.
From 1999 to 2004, it was customary for all of her singles to be packaged with at least four remixes, and those songs reworked by particularly prominent producers like Wippenberg and Above & Beyond have been released in Europe under the AYU name (distributed by Drizzly records from 2004-2006 in vinyl, CD, and digital formats).
In addition to the ayu-mi-x series, remixes of Ayu's music has also been compiled on more genre-specific discs titled ayu-trance and ayu-ro (Eurobeat).
